Portuguese Citizenship by Descent

Reclaim your connection to Portugal through citizenship by descent

Portugal offers one of Europe's most accessible citizenship by descent programs, with pathways available to children, grandchildren, and even great-grandchildren of Portuguese citizens.

Portuguese nationality law operates on the principle of jus sanguinis (right of blood), meaning citizenship passes through family lineage regardless of where you were born. If you have Portuguese ancestry, you may already be a Portuguese citizen or have a straightforward path to becoming one. Portugal also permits dual citizenship, allowing you to maintain your current nationality. As a member of the European Union, Portuguese citizenship grants you the right to live and work throughout the EU.

Citizenship by Descent Pathways

Children of Portuguese Citizens

If you were born to at least one Portuguese parent, you are likely already a Portuguese citizen by birth. This applies regardless of where you were born and whether your parents were married. You simply need to register your birth with Portuguese authorities to obtain documentation.

Grandchildren of Portuguese Citizens

If you are the grandchild of a Portuguese citizen, you can acquire Portuguese citizenship through a simplified process. Requirements include:

  • Proof that your grandparent was a Portuguese citizen
  • Demonstration of ties to the Portuguese community (this can include knowledge of Portuguese language, visits to Portugal, involvement in Portuguese cultural organizations, or other connections)
  • Registration at a Portuguese consulate or civil registry office

The "ties to the Portuguese community" requirement is interpreted flexibly and can often be satisfied through documentation of your family's Portuguese heritage and your connection to Portuguese culture.

Great-Grandchildren and Further Descendants

Recent legislative changes have opened pathways for more distant descendants. If your great-grandparent was Portuguese, you may be eligible if:

  • You can prove the unbroken chain of descent from the Portuguese ancestor
  • You can demonstrate effective ties to the Portuguese community
  • You meet the same documentation and registration requirements as grandchildren

The further removed you are generationally, the more important it becomes to demonstrate substantive ties to Portugal or the Portuguese community, but these requirements remain achievable for motivated applicants.

Sephardic Jewish Descendants

Portugal has a special provision for descendants of Sephardic Jews who were expelled during the Inquisition. This pathway has its own requirements and procedures, which we can assess during your consultation if relevant to your family history.

Required Documentation

The documentation requirements vary based on which generation you are, but typically include:

  • Your birth certificate and those of your parents (and grandparents if applicable)
  • Proof of your ancestor's Portuguese citizenship (birth certificate, identity card, passport, etc.)
  • Marriage certificates showing the chain of descent
  • Criminal record certificate from your country of residence
  • Evidence of ties to the Portuguese community (for grandchildren and further descendants)

All foreign documents must be properly authenticated (usually through apostille) and translated into Portuguese by a certified translator. We handle this entire process for you, ensuring every document meets Portuguese requirements.

Benefits of Portuguese Citizenship

  • Full European Union citizenship rights, including freedom to live, work, and study anywhere in the EU
  • Visa-free or visa-on-arrival access to over 180 countries
